Henderson Herald “Henny” Selby

   Henderson Herald “Henny” Selby, 80, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, January 20, 2021.

   Henny was born September 9, 1940 in Greenup to the late Charles Lee and Marcella Grace Herald Selby.

   He was a member of Second Free Will Baptist Church and retired as a Steel Worker at AK Steel.

   He leaves behind his loving wife Saundra Loar Selby; a son David Selby (Laureen) of Conway, NH; a daughter Suzanne Selby Barker of Lexington; four grandchildren: Madisyn Selby, Shaelyn Selby, Hannah Barker and Cade Barker; along with a host of extended family and friends.

   A private graveside service was conducted Saturday at Ashland Cemetery with military honors provided by the US Navy and Kenova American Legion Post #93, with brother Gary Loar officiating.

   Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood have been entrusted with the services. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Community Hospice Care Center 2330 Pollard Rd, Ashland, KY 41101.

Tony Pasco Versey, Jr

   Tony Pasco Versey, Jr, 79, of Ashland, husband of Doris Wells Versey, passed away Tuesday, January 19.

   Tony was born April 4, 1941 in Ashland, KY to the late Tony Pasco, Versey SR. and Nancy West Hunt. Tony proudly served his country with 3 years of service in US Army and 3 years in the US Army National Guard. He retired from Tremco in Cleveland, OH after 35 years of service.

   In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by sister Geraldine Rye; brother-in-laws, Bill, Fred, and Ike Wells and sister-in-laws, Lorraine Kirk, Linda Ray, and Rita Devaney.

   Tony is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Doris Wells Versey of Ashland; one son, Tony Pasco Versey, III (Tamassa) of Ashland; three brothers, Theodore Hunt, Vernal Salyers, Bruce Salyers; one sister, Delores Bentley; two grandchildren, Tony Pasco Versey IV (Chelsey Hall) and Ashley Ferreyra (Alejandro); one great grandchild, Tony Pasco Versey V; brother-in-law Danny Wells (Chattie); sister-in-law Janet Mullins (Milton), and a host of extended family and friends.

   Funeral services were Saturday, January 23, 2021 at Caniff Funeral Home by Pastor Shawn Rose. Military Services were provided by US Army and Kenova American Legion Post #93. Burial followed in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Robert Allen Triplett, Sr.

   Robert Allen Triplett Age 71 of Ashland, Kentucky passed away January 16, 2021 at his residence.

   He was born January 22, 1949, in Ashland, a son of the late Dr. Harold and Phyllis Triplett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Robert Allen Triplett II, in 2020.

   Robert retired from AK Steel, proudly served his country in the US Army National Guard, was a Mason and longstanding member of Elks Lodge 350 BPOE. Robert was an avid skier, loved gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was a loving father who loved spending time with his children and grandchildren.

   Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Misty Kay Triplett; brother Harold Bruce Triplett; sister Amy Triplett Morgan; two grandchildren, Willow Grace Triplett, and Lennon Jude Maxwell Triplett; as well as a host of extended family members and dear friends.

Ronald David Cole

   Ronald David Cole, 73, of Ashland passed away Tuesday, January 19, 2021.

   Ronald was born October 11, 1947 in Ashland to the late William Green Cole and Lula Hicks Cole Hugenot.

   He was preceded in death by his father, William Cole, sister Donna Cole, wife, Sandra Murphy Cole, and daughter, Christy Carroll. Ronald was a retired electrician with IBEW #317. He was a member of Fred M. Gross Lodge F&AM #953 and was a member of Rose Hill Baptist Church.

   He leaves behind children Larry Cole (Heather), Alan Ringrose, and Nicki Ringrose Morrison (Rick), all of Ashland; mother Lula Cole Hugenot of Ashland; significant other Debbie Knipp of Ashland; brother Tim Cole (Tammy); sister Teresa Cole Crisp (Ronald); 12 grandchildren, Trace and Garrett Cole, Rodney Johnstone, Justin, Ryan and Leo Eldridge, Jesse Carroll and Allie Flake, Christopher, Brynleigh and Landen Ringrose, Kolten Tussey; great-grandchildren Aubree, Grayson, and Myles; and a host of extended family and friends.

   Services will be private with Tom Stephens officiating.

Richard Shawn “Rick” Gipson

   Richard Shawn “Rick” Gipson, 47, of Ashland, passed away at UK Medical Center Thursday, January 21, 2021 following an extended illness.

   Rick was born November 16, 1973 in Ashland, KY to the late Charles Edward Gipson Sr. and Malvie Wilson Gipson.He was a self-employed carpenter and of the Pentecostal faith.

   In addition to his parents, Rick was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Gipson, Jr and Jeffery Scott Gipson.

   Survivors include his loving wife of 26 years, Sherri Jackson Gipson; four children, Kyle Lee Gipson, Shawn Bradley Gipson, Catrina Lynn Gipson, and Devin Cole Gipson, all of Ashland; three brothers, Clinton David Gipson of Birmingham, AL, Jonathan “Johnny” Gipson of Ironton, OH and Jason Gipson of Ashland; four sisters, Elizabeth “Libby” Hunt of South Point, OH, Peggy Adams of Ashland, Shirley “Robin” Mullins and Autumn Whitt, both of Ashland, along with a host of extended family and friends.

   Visitation will be Saturday, January 30, 2021 from 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Graveside funeral services will follow at Whitt-Westpfahl-Gipson Cemetery in Ashland with Brother David Gipson officiating.

   In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Rick’s memory to Caniff Funeral Home, 528 Wheatley Road, Ashland, KY 41101 to help the family with funeral expenses.

Stanley Thomas Lewis

   Stanley Thomas Lewis, known to his friends as Tom or Tommy, passed away very suddenly on January 16, 2021. 

   Tommy was born on December 17, 1962 in Ashland, KY, a son of the late Walter David Lewis and Faye Etta Thompson. He is preceded in death by his sister Paula May of Ashland, and his brother Walter David Lewis Jr. of Roanoke, VA. 

   Tommy was a graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School and furthered his education at Ashland Vocational School with a degree in machine shop technology. Tommy was an accomplished machinist and he won awards for his exceptional skills. On top of his machinist skills, he was an exceptional woodworker and carpenter.  It seemed that Tommy could “fix” anything. Tommy and his wife Jo also loved to ride his Harley.  He loved to go fishing at Joe’s Fish Camp and he loved to play cards with his buddies at camp on the river. He was simply up for an adventure. Especially if the adventure allowed him to take his boat, his motorcycle, or if he could absorb any kind of historical facts on the journey or at the adventure’s destination.  

   Tommy is survived by his wife Jo Simons, and his daughter Nikkiah (Jamie) Simons. He is also survived by his sister, Kathy Lewis Cook of Akron, OH and her three sons, a nephew in Prestonsburg, KY, three great nieces and a great nephew. 

   There was a private service to celebrate Tommy's life on Sunday, January, 24, 2021 by Brother Jim Smedley at Preston Family Funeral Home. 

 

Leslie Martin "Buddy" Voiers

   Leslie Martin “Buddy” Voiers, 83, of Ashland, KY went to his Heavenly home at Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility on January 18, 2021. He was born on September 26, 1937 in Vanceburg, KY to the late Harlan and Thelma Davenport Voiers.

   He was retired from Ashland Oil Refinery and was also a broker and owner of Ashland Realty. He and his brother Kelly owned and operated the Grayson Lake marina for 35 years. He was a long time member of Old Orchard Christian Church but attended First Baptist Church of Ashland for many years.

   Leslie is survived by his loving wife Lana Alexander Voiers of Ashland; daughter Melissa Carol Stewart of St. Petersburg, FL; brother Kelley Voiers and wife Robin of Ashland; sister Theresa Litteral; grandchildren Holly, Kyle and Staci Stewart, great grandchildren Madeline Tackett and Jayce Franklin, sisters in law Carole Johnson and husband Norvin, and Sheila Fraley and husband Mike, and dear friend Janet Cross.

   Due to Covid restrictions, private family funeral services will be held at Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum and will be officiated by Reverend Marty Voiers. Entombment will follow in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

Michael Ray Sammons

   Michael Ray Sammons, 67, of Catlettsburg, passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2021, at U.K. Medical Center.

   He was born July 19, 1953, in Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Grant and Barbara Jean Wright Sammons. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two siblings, Belva Lynn Sammons and Guy Bryan Sammons.

   Mike was the proprietor of Lube Equip. Inc. in Ashland. He served honorably in the US Navy during Vietnam. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing and attending his grandkids activities.

   Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 49 years, Dottie Sammons of Catlettsburg; son, Grant (Tammy) Sammons of Ashland; daughter, Lisa (Billy) Moore of Ashland; brother, Stan (Karen) Sammons; grandchildren, Brant Sammons, Lexie Sammons, Michael Sammons and Natalie Moore; and extended family members and dear friends.

   A celebration of Mike’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, 2021, at Steen Funeral Home 13th Street with words of comfort provided by his son, Pastor Grant Sammons. Burial will follow at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Ronald "Possum" Evans

   Ronald “Possum” Evans, 69, of Catlettsburg, died peacefully on Monday, January 18, 2021.

   He was born May 9, 1951, in Ashland, KY, a son of the late Emmer and Pauline Lewis Evans. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Emmor Evans, Jr.

   Possum retired following a long career with Ashland Oil. He was a member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. 350. He enjoyed golfing, playing his guitar and deep sea fishing.

   Survivors include his loving wife of 30 years, Mary Bodo Evans; son, Joshua (Sherri) Evans; grandchildren, Caleb and Hunter Evans; niece, Carrie, and nephew Justin; sisters in law, Catherine B. Spencer and Lisa (Terri) Bodo-Saunders, their children, Marian Turner, Rachel Saunders and Amelia Turner; and a host of dear friends.

   A celebration of Possum’s life was held on Saturday, January 23, 2021, with Chaplain Jimm Smedley officiating, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel.

Mary Beth Bowen

   Mary Beth Bowen, 60, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, died Tuesday, January 19, at Kings Daughters Medical Center following a sudden illness.  

   Mary Beth was born December 17, 1960 in Ashland, a daughter of the late Mark and Faye Price Patrick. She was a homemaker and loved her family and her grandchildren. 

   Surviving include two sons: Jimmy Bowen of Flatwoods, and Daniel Bowen of Ashland; two daughters: Amanda Bowen and Jessica Bowen, both of Flatwoods; sisters Nancy Jacobs of Lloyd, and Lisa Stevens of Flatwoods; four grandchildren and many friends. 

   A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Preston Family Funeral Home.

 

Norma James Ritter

   Norma James Ritter, 88, of Flatwoods, KY, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, January 19, 2021 at her residence.

   Mrs. Ritter was born September 19, 1932, in Carter County, KY to the late Irdle and Bethel Forrest James.

   In addition to her parents, Norma was preceded in death by her loving husband, Glen C. Ritter; son Fredrick Ritter; brothers Verlin and Billy James; grandchildren Erin Steward and Jesse Lee Ritter; great-grandchildren Rodney Eugenie and Luke Aaron Dunn; and son-in-law, Robert Powell.

   Mrs. Ritter was a Unit Secretary at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital in Russell, and a member of Russell First Baptist Church.

   Norma is survived by a son, Douglas Lora Ritter of Flatwoods; a daughter, Marilyn Powell of Flatwoods; two grandchildren, Aubrey Greeding and James Ritter; three great-grandchildren, Alex Breeding, Sarah Dunn, and Megan Dunn; two brothers, Vernon and Jackie James both of Grayson; seven sisters, Olive James Culver of Flatwoods, Violet Wolfe of Gainesville, TX, Joy Bricker of Mansfield, OH, Evelyn Cartee and Geneva Coltville both of Cleveland, OH, Margie Meenachs of Olive Hill, and Doretha Albright of Grayson; and a host of extended family and friends.

   A funeral service was held on Monday, January 25, 2021, at Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods with Pastor Ken Gowin officiating. Burial followed at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Russell.
