Carrie Faye “Peggy” Kennard Woods
Carrie Faye "Peggy" Kennard Woods, 75 of Ashland, passed away Sunday, June 06, 2021, at Hospice of Central Ohio.
Peggy was born June 02, 1946, in Rockhouse, Kentucky to the late Russell and Mollie Pack Kennard.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one sister Sarah Handy.
Anyone who knew Peggy, would agree she was a leader, a survivor, and the foundation of everything she was involved with. She successfully raised two children as a teen mother, when the odds were against her. A self-proclaimed 'mean mom’, she used old school child rearing techniques and was not afraid of the kitchen spatula or fly swatter. One look and that is all it took, for everyone knew it was time to move. She aspired to be a hairdresser since her childhood, and she put herself through school to get her license and eventually own and operate a successful beauty shop for 30+ years. She worked early and stayed late to amass a huge following throughout her career. Most people who knew her, did not know she endured a life of pain with two forms of arthritis nearly crippling her, yet she never complained. Only the scars of surgery and joint replacements tell the tale. She loved God, her family, and her career just as it was. Peggy was an active member of Unity Baptist Church where she was a member of the sanctuary choir. She was a member of the Democratic Women's Club, and her favorite politician was JFK. She loved to paint, draw, sketch, sew, and travel. The RV was her chariot, and her greatest joy was entertaining her grandchildren where her call-name was 'Nana'. Her nurturing and caregiving were second to none, and she loved to cook for her family and friends.
She leaves behind her loving husband Bobby Jack Woods; one daughter Suzie Cornwell (John) of Ashland; one son Dr. James 'Butch' Maze (Michelle) of Lake Charles, LA; two bonus children Justin Woods (Tawnya) and Laura Justice (Marty) both of Ashland; two sisters Nell Franklin of New Lebanon, OH; and Barbara Nickel of Grayson; seven grandchildren Tanner Crump, Hunter Crump, Wesley Maze, Mollie Maze, Charlie Maze, Clay Woods and Ian Justice; along with a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, June 10 at Unity Baptist Church in Ashland with Pastor Gary Arrington officiating. Entombment followed at Ashland Cemetery.
Services have been entrusted to Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood.
