Richard Kouns

   Richard Kouns, 57, of Ashland, Kentucky passed away October 6, 2021 due to a brief illness. 

   Richard was born December 23, 1963 in Ashland to the late Gerald Elwood and Francis Ethel Kouns. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Danny Joe Kouns and a sister, Madalon Jaye Kouns Smith. 

   Rick was a former pipe liner. Surviving him are four brothers, John Anthony “Tony” Kouns and his wife Carole of Russell, Charles Perry Kouns and his wife Jennifer of Ashland, Gerald Bryan “Beanie” Kouns and his wife Karen of Ashland, Richard Henderson Kouns of Ashland and three sisters, Elizabeth Ann Fultz of Ashland, Connie Lucille Lambert of Ashland, and Sabra Jan Back and her husband David of Ashland. 

   A memorial service for Rick will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, October 14, 2021 in Ashland Cemetery Mausoleum.

James E. Caldwell

   James E. Caldwell, 85, of Ashland, passed away Sunday, October 3, 2021, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

   He was born on January 17, 1936, in Boyd County, Kentucky to the late Charles Joel Caldwell and Ruby Mae Harris Newsome. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Janis Caldwell; and two sisters, Virginia Maruo and Paige Lambert.

   Jim owned and operated C C Coin and served honorably in the United States Marine Corps. He was a member of Greenhill Masonic Lodge 521. Jim never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting with his family and friends.

   Survivors include his loving wife, Linda Weaver Caldwell of Ashland; two sons, Steve Caldwell and Charlie Caldwell both of Ashland; stepson, Jeffery Ratliff of Ashland; sister, Bonnie Duncan of Michigan; half-brother, Johnny Newsome of Michigan; and a granddaughter, Brie Caldwell.

   Graveside services were held Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Catlettsburg Cemetery with words of comfort provided by Pastor Frank Hulett.

 James "Buddy" Figley

   James B. “Buddy” Figley, 73, of Russell, passed away Wednesday, October 06, 2021, at Community Hospice.

   He was born February 14, 1948, in Ashland, Kentucky, to the late James Walter and Kathleen Sloan Figley. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Sandy Barber.

   Buddy was a 1966 graduate of Paul Blazer High School. He retired following a 41 year career with Marathon where he served as President of the Union. He served on the State School Board Association and was a member of Elks Lodge BPOE 350.

   Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife of 55 years, Toni Webb Figley of Russell; son, James Matthew (Cathy Queen) Figley of Ashland; daughter, Missy Figley (Garry) Morris of Russell; brother, Mark Figley of Indianapolis, IN; three grandchildren, Zach Figley, Piper Figley and McKenah Morris; and a host of extended family members and dear friends.

   Funeral and Elks services were held Friday, October 8, 2021, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with words of comfort provided by Chaplain Jimm Smedley. Burial followed in Rose Hill Burial Park.

Walter Stephens, Jr.

   Walter Stephens Jr. 84, of Winchester, KY formerly of Ashland, died Tuesday October 5, 2021 at his residence.

   He was born April 15, 1937 in Ashland,the son of the late Walter Sr. and Opal Queen Stephens.

   He was retired from Armco Steel, a member of the Poage Masonic Lodge 325 F & AM, a lifelong Democrat, a Kentucky colonel, member of the American Legion and an avid golfer.

   In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Jean Stephens.

   Survivors include four children, Jane (Mark) Walker of Winchester, Beth (Chris) Sligh of Winchester, Joanna (Bram) Clarke of Winchester, and Walter (Tammy) Stephens III of Isamorada, FL; one brother, Neil (Dottie) Stephens of Georgetown; one sister, Doris Holland of Ashland; eight grandchildren, Tyler, Chelsea, Amy, Taylor, Jett, Jennifer, Julianna, Wilson and one great grandchild, Lydia.

   The family received friends Sunday October 10, 2021 at the Steen Funeral Home 13th Street Chapel.

Harold Dean Tate

 

   Coach Harold Tate, 88, of Boyd County, died Saturday evening, October 9, at Best Care of Wheelersburg while under hospice care. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, in 2016.  

   Arrangements are pending at Preston Family Funeral Home.

 

Linda R. Young

   Linda R. Young, 79, of Ashland, Kentucky, passed away Friday evening October 8, 2021 at her residence with her daughters by her side. 

   Linda was born November 15, 1941 in Boyd County to the late Ernest C. and Magel Clay Elswick. Linda retired from GTE. 

   Surviving her are three daughters, Theresa Haney and her husband Robert of Wurtland, Susan Cline and her husband Thomas of Savannah, Ga., Kathleen Adams and her husband Jon of Ashland, half sister, Mary Hammond of Ashland,  niece, Pamela Whitt and her husband Mike of Ashland, nephew, Richard “Marty” Worley of Ashland, five grandchildren, Thomas Gamble Jr, Joshua Gamble, Thomas Cline Jr., Nicholas Cline, Harrison Adams, and five great grandchildren, Augustine Cline, Kalea Cline, Sebastian Cline, Charlotte Cline, and Beauregard Cline. 

   A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 13, 2021 at the Rose Hill Burial Park Mausoleum with Chaplain Jimm Smedley officiating. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Mausoleum. 

   In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Community Hospice 1480 Carter Ave. Ashland, Ky. 41101. Funeral services are under the direction of Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.

Paul LeRoy Swisher 

 

   Paul LeRoy Swisher, 66, of Ashland, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 at Kings Daughters Medical Center in Ashland.

   Mr. Swisher was born April 13, 1955 in Fulton County, Pennsylvania, a son of the late Jack and Dorothy Pearl Lehman Swisher.

   Paul was an Independent Sourcing Director in the Clothing Industry and a member of the Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #350 in Ashland. He was a fun loving, good-hearted guy and enjoyed being around his friends and family.

   Those left to cherish his memory include his loving wife Wendy Ash Swisher of Ashland, step-daughter Tiffany Morrison Blanton, husband Nathan and their son Conner Blanton of Franklin Furnace, OH, step-son Joshua Morrison of Wheelersburg, OH and his longtime friend & companion Tonya Howard of McDermott, OH and a host of good friends and extended family.

   Arrangements have been entrusted to Steen Funeral Home and are pending at this time. A Celebration of Life is planned for a later date.

W. Dean Bayes 

   W. Dean Bayes, 84, of Flatwoods, passed away Thursday, October 7, 2021, at Trinity Station in Flatwoods.

   Dean was born February 8, 1937, in Ironton, Ohio to the late Ervin and Alka Salyer Bayes.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife Judith Adams Bayes; and two sisters Mildred Emogene (Beady) Phillips and Hermalee “Tootie” (Walter Peanut) Salyers.

   Dean was a former employee of Johnson’s Dairy, Modern Foods and Big Sandy Furniture. He was also an active member of the Ashland Elks BPOE #350.

   He leaves behind three sons Mike Bayes (Faith) of Owasso, OK, David Bayes (Francesca) of Versailles and Steve Bayes of Louisville; one daughter Kim Nall (Rodd) of Russell; seven grandchildren Will Bayes, Trent Tice, Jaxon Nall, Deanna Tarpley (Ray), Darian Hill, Matthew Smith and Aaron Smith (Katie); one great-grandchild Oliver Tarpley; along with numerous nieces and nephews and extended family and friends.

   Funeral services were Monday October 11, 2021, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood with Chaplain Jimm Smedley officiating. Entombment followed at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens. Elks services were provided by the officers and members of Ashland Elks BPOE #350.

Freda J. Waugh Justice

   Freda J. Waugh Justice, 62, of Ashland, Kentucky passed away October 1, 2021 at her residence. 

   Freda was born, February 6, 1959 in Ashland to the late James Scarberry Sr. and Gradith Waugh Scarberry. Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her adoptive father Millard Waugh, her husband Ralph E. Justice and a son Michael Justice. 

   Freda was a homemaker and attended Open Word Ministry in South Point. Surviving her are one son, Paul Justice (Josie) of Ashland, two brothers, Millard Scarberry of Brooksville, Fl., James Scarberry Jr. of Reynoldsburg, Oh., two sisters, Teresa Bayer of Chillicothe, Oh., Sharon Dossett of Amanda, Oh., and her lifelong friend Diane. 

   Funeral services for Freda were held  Friday, October 8 at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland, with Evangelist Robert Gillette officiating. 

   Burial followed services in Rose Hill Burial Park. Arrangements are under the direction of Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Condolences may be offered at www.mfhfuneralhome.com.

 

John Edward Musick 

John Edward Musick, 43, of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, October 6, 2021.

   John was born March 18, 1978, in Ironton to Vicki Sue Musick.

   He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents Larry Edward and Margie Litteral Salyers and John Grant Musick; and his wife Melannie Hensley Musick.

   John loved watching sports and was an avid Cincinnati Reds and Louisville Cardinals fan.

   He leaves behind his son Alexander Musick; his mother Vicki Sue Musick of Westwood; a stepson J.R. Barker of Ashland; along with a host of extended family and friends.

   Visitation was Monday, October 11, 2021, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood.
