Joseph Edwin “Ed” Shaffer Jr.

 

 

   Joseph Edwin “Ed” Shaffer Jr., 77, of Russell, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2020 at his residence.

   Ed was born June 8, 1943 in Henderson, Kentucky to the late Joseph Edwin Shaffer Sr. and Rowena Wade Shaffer.

   Ed attended Ashland High School where he was a member of the Rifle Team. He was a great marksman throughout his high school years. After high school, Ed proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was part of the 25th Infantry where he served as a gunner and sniper. Ed was also a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University where he was a member of the Rifle team. While at EKU he traveled the United States with the team and placed second in the nation. He would go on to work at St Mary’s Medical Center where he served as a Purchasing Supervisor and was responsible for ordering medical supplies. He attended Mead Memorial Methodist Church. He loved fishing, was an avid University of Kentucky Wildcats fan, loved playing golf, enjoyed playing bridge and playing cards with his friends.

   He leaves behind his loving wife of 53 years Esther “Sissy” Shaffer; one son, Joseph Edwin Shaffer III (Marrianne) of Russell; one sister, Sherry Childers (Marvin) of Ashland; several nieces and nephews, along with a host of extended family and friends.

   Funeral services were conducted Monday, June 22 at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood with Pastor Larry Puryear officiating. Burial followed at Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Northeast with military honors provided by the United States Army, Kenova American Legion Post # 93, and the Patriot Guard.
