Matthew Ryan Stephens



   Matthew Ryan Stephens, 27, of Lexington, formerly of Westwood, passed away Monday, June 22, 2020 at his residence. Matthew was born August 7, 1992 in Ashland, KY, a son of Michael Lloyd Stephens of Ashland, and Melitza Sowley of Ashland.

   Matthew was a 2010 graduate of Fairview High School and a 2013 graduate of Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s degree in Risk Management and Insurance. He was a member of the Phi Kappa Honorary Fraternity, Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Fraternity, Gamma Iota Sigma Professional Fraternity, Sigma Pi Fraternity, Risk and Insurance Management Society and the International Society of Insurance Professionals. He was a Real Estate Certified Insurance Professional in Lexington.

   Matt loved life. He traveled the world, enjoyed hiking and attending many concerts and sporting events, routing on the UK Wildcats, Cincinnati Reds and NY Jets. Matt’s kindness, great sense of humor, outgoing personality and beautiful smile would light up any room. Matt was always happy and lived his life to the fullest. He touched many lives worldwide and will be missed but, never forgotten.

   In addition to his parents, Matthew is survived by his step mother, Joann Stephens of Ashland; paternal grandparents, Clarence and June Stephens of Rush; maternal grandparents, Jorge Sowley, Sr. and Maritza Nunez de Sowley, uncle, Jorge Sowley, and cousin, Chrismarie Doval all of Panama; sister, Gonnievieve Stamper of Ashland; stepsister, Casey Dudgeon of Ashland; uncles, Jeff (Cristina), Gary (Cathy), Donnie (Vanessa) Stephens; best friends Chadwick Dale and Bradley Tussey and extended family and friends.

   The Stephens family will host a service to celebrate Matt’s life at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening, June 30, 2020, at Steen Funeral Home 13th St. Chapel by Roger Wireman. Visitation will be prior to services from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
