EAST CARTER 1
East Carter was slated to capture its third region title in five consecutive appearances in the title game.
Ashland did not get the message after a 2-1 upset of the defending 16th Region champs at Boyd County High School Thursday night.
Gridlocked in a stalemate after 40 minutes of action, the Tomcats found the back of the net first on a Drew Clark goal in the opening minutes of the second half. Ashland pushed the lead to 2-0 after Parker Miller finished an assist from Luke Stahler.
East Carter responded with its only goal of the game in the 51st minute as the Raiders fell to the Tomcats for the second time this season.
Ashland allowed only one goal over its three games in the tournament to secure the first Tomcats’ regional crown since 2013 and has six of their last seven contests.
ASHLAND 4 PERRY COUNTY CENTRAL 1
It took only four minutes for Ashland’s Ben Acuff to put the Tomcats in front of Perry County Central Saturday afternoon in the sectional round of the State Championship.
Tied 1-1 in the final 15 minutes of regulation, the Tomcats missed scoring opportunities turned into a scoring frenzy that advances them into the Elite 8 Monday night with a 4-1 win over the Commodores.
Noble Eleazu scored twice in a span of six minutes that put the Tomcats in front for good. Landon Scott’s header off an Eleazu header in the 76th minute closed out the scoring for the contest.
Goalie Matthew Jimison’s stellar play in the net continued with the save of a Commodores’ penalty kick in the 49th minute and another stop in a 1-on-1 challenge by a Commodore offensive player from inside the 18-yard box.
Ashland has won seven of its last eight and will play 13th Region champ Corbin Monday night for a trip to the state Final Four.
