Fabian Desire’ Layne, a Cardiac Sonographer with King’s Daughters Medical Center, is the Greater Ashland Beacon’s Hero of the Week.
Layne, 34, has been employed with KDMC for the past 10.5 years, and has been dedicated to her field in cardiology.
Layne said the most rewarding part of her job is learning the intricacies of how the heart relates to the human body.
Layne also said that one of the biggest challenges of her position is “reckoning with the intricacies of the human being.”
February was American Heart Month, and the Greater Ashland Beacon recognizes the important role that cardiac sonographers have in promoting a heart healthy world.
Cardiology is the study and treatment of disorders of the heart and blood vessels. Cardiac Sonographers, also known as echocardiographers, are health care professionals specially trained to use imaging technology to help physicians diagnose heart problems in patients, according to a definition by the Mayo Clinic. They operate ultrasound equipment that provides moving 2-D or 3-D images of the heart and its chambers, called an echocardiogram.
A career in cardiac sonography can be very rewarding, said Layne. Layne recommended that anyone considering a career as a cardiac sonographer to know their strengths and weaknesses.
“Be authentically you,” said Layne. “Always strive for growth.”
