Library Con is Coming to Flatwoods City Park

Sasha Bush The Ashland Beacon It was once said by an unknown author that “Knowledge is free at the library. Just bring your own container.” No matter what your preferences in reading there is literally something to be found to fit the needs of everyone at a library. Greenup County Public Library is getting ready to host its renowned Library Con on September 10, from 5-9 p.m. at the Flatwoods city Park. Stephanie Huffman, who works closely with the Greenup County Public Library, shared with us, “Library Con was started in connection with our Summer Reading Program back in 2015. Every Hero Has a Story was the theme that year. What we wanted to do was offer a mini con so that everyone had a chance to celebrate all things geeky and nerdy. It was also a way to offer the con experience to those who were unable to attend the larger cons in the area.” So just what is a con you may ask? Con is just short for the word convention. So, a con is just a large meeting or conference that meets to celebrate, take part in or discuss certain topics of interest. “We will have food, crafts and activities. We encourage everyone to dress up as a character from their favorite comic book, movie, TV show, anime or manga. We will also have an array of vendors who are bringing everything from sweets to Dungeons and Dragons Dice,” stated Huffman. Huffman went on to add, “We will also have oversized outdoor games, a superhero training course, laser tag, painting with water guns, a sidewalk chalk area and a bubble area.” You will also be able to find a variety of different crafts to take part in such as 8-bit art, various paper crafts, marshmallow shooters and do it yourself light sabers which is sure to be a hit with all you Star Wars fans. “We will have live music featuring Axis, a cosplay contest, ultimate trivia, panels on fantasy world building with Cathie Shaffer, cosplay 101 featuring Carolyn McGranahan and special FX: Finding Your Inner Zombie with Joshua Joseph,” noted Huffman. This event is sure to be an educational fun filled experience for everyone in attendance. Public libraries play such a vital role in our communities. Most people may view public libraries as just a large building with a lot of books. But public libraries are so much more than that and have so much more to offer. “People tend to look at libraries as a single purpose, whether it’s checking out materials or making a copy of something. But many fail to see the full range of services that the library has available. These services include digital services that provide 24-hour access to language learning and digital arts and craft classes. We also have nature kits that help families explore the great outdoors. We provide programs for all ages from crafting to dinner and a movie.” The Greenup County Public Library also offer bookmobiles that will travel throughout the county providing access to both its books and other services to anyone that may be unable to travel to the local library branch. Hotspots are also available for check out upon request.
