When I was younger, my grandma used to always have a suncatcher above her kitchen sink. I was obsessed with the spirals of crystalline blue it cast on the countertops, and I remember always asking her where it came from. Now, it’s our turn to make memories through suncatchers.

Hosted by the Boyd County Government and sponsored by Advantage Plus Realty, on July 21 free sno-cones from Kona Ice and a suncatcher activity will be available to the public. It’s time to come out and enjoy sunshine, sno-cones, and make our own suncatchers!

Kacy Abrams, the Boyd County Community Development Director based out of the fiscal court in Catlettsburg, is the creator and main host of the event. In her mind, now is the perfect time to get outside and enjoy all the community has to offer.

“We just want to promote fun and safe events for the community and the children that live here and give them something to do,” explained Abrams. “I want to help build community and really bring people together and give them a fun experience.”

The event is sponsored by Ervena Howard-Kiser of Advantage Plus Reality. “We volunteer and sponsor events around the Tri-State.  Kacy [Abrams] had asked if we would like to sponsor because we like to sponsor softball, football, baseball, anything for the public, and I said ‘Absolutely!” explained Howard-Kiser.

Howard-Kiser agreed with Abrams about the event being the perfect way to get the community together and outside in the sunshine. She noted that she had 10 grandchildren, and she knew the sno-cones in the 100 degree heat and the painting activity would be a huge hit with the children.

The event will run from 12-1 p.m. on July 21 at Armco Park Shelter 3. Kona Ice will be free for children 18 and under. Those in attendance will be able to paint and design their very own suncatcher while enjoying their frozen treat. Supplies for the craft will be provided.

Abrams expressed her vision for the event.  “I think it would be that families would come together, get some quality time together, and be able to mix and mingle with their friends and in a safe and inviting environment.” Abrams wants to create lasting memories for everyone—all against the backdrop of the beautiful Armco Park.

Overall, the event is sure to be exciting and a great way to spend an afternoon. In the future, the Boyd County Community and Development team plans to host many more events such as this one, including more activities during the weekend as well. Those interested in keeping up with the Boyd County Community and Development team should be sure to follow them on their Facebook page. Go out and make some beautiful suncatchers!
