Purpose Driven: Villers’ Divineplan Now Available

Deidra Bowling-Meade The Ashland Beacon Do you have a purpose? Are you making a difference? Why am I here? Our country has been battling the effects of Covid-19 these last two years, and it seems that most people have shut themselves off from society. Their drive is less, and they are complacent with life. That’s not the case with Ashland native, Christian Villers. The pandemic inspired Villers to achieve success with his first published book titled Divineplan, as well as develop a clothing line and website. Villers shared his testimony stating: “A pivotal moment for me took place at the start of the pandemic. It was during this time that God opened my eyes and helped to see what this life is really about. Initially, I felt Him calling me to use my creative abilities for His glory, and to do so through an apparel brand. This brand (also called Divineplan) was built during the early months of the Covid lockdown and launched in June of 2020. At first, I thought that Divineplan was only going to be a clothing brand. I really had no plans to write a book, but it was early in this process where I began to see that God had way more in store.” Villers continued, “Through Divineplan and the reach that the company had on social media, I was given the opportunity to connect with people all across the globe. These people would message me about things they struggled with, and I would use these messages as an opportunity to share with them the hope that is found in Jesus Christ. Afterwards, these individuals let me know how much my writing helped them. They would tell me how the messages encouraged them to follow God’s purpose for their life. It was during this time that I felt God calling me to write. Writing is something that I have always enjoyed, but through these interactions, He showed me that this is something He has called me to do. Around this time, I began the process for this book. After 15 months of a ton of prayer, reading, and work, by His grace alone, the book was published this summer. What I hope to achieve through Divineplan, is pray that others are inspired to live a life of eternal significance. In a world that encourages people to pursue temporal desires, I pray they understand that true fulfillment is found in Christ alone and that everything they have, they have been given to glorify His name. If just one person comes to know Jesus through the company or book, then all that has gone into this was worth it.” On September 6, the study guide for Villers’ book will be available for purchase. Villers said, “The study guide is filled with thought-provoking questions and would make an excellent addition for any youth or adult group looking for something inspirational to use. Through both the book and study guide, readers will come to understand that there is something much greater to be pursuing. They will be inspired to make the most of their short time on earth by doing so for the glory of Jesus Christ.” Both the book and study guide will encourage others to find their purpose in life. We all have a purpose; it’s important to realize that God has a purpose and plan for each of us. Amazon reviews on Divineplan have been positive. Sam Whatley, author of Meek Like a War Horse, was “astounded” after reading it due to “the author’s understanding of Christan principles and his age. Christian Villers is 23.” Whately continues, “This book can be read by not-yet-believers seeking truth in the chaos or by veterans of years of Bible study who still want to go deeper. In my opinion, this presentation of the Gospel rivals anything I have read or heard from Dr. David Jeremiah, Dr. R.C. Spourl or any other pastor or theologian.” Villers didn’t publish a book or start a clothing line for fame or money. Villers lives each day to fulfill what the Bible teaches us in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Villers travels around the area to share his testimony with others. He has also set up his book at local events and conferences. Villers humbly proclaimed, “Everything good in my life is because of Him, and He is deserving of all the glory that my life can bring to Him. I would also like to thank my family. Words can’t describe how blessed I am to have them in my life. Thank you as well to the Ashland community. Your support means the world!” If you are looking for encouragement and finding purpose, make sure to follow Christian Villers on social media and learn more at his website: mydivineplan.com. Divineplan can be purchased on Amazon.com or locally at Broadway Books (Located at 1537 Winchester Ave). The study guide will be available starting September 6.

Updates Happening at the McConnell House

Morgan Hall The Ashland Beacon If you were wondering about the commotion at the McConnell house, we have an inside source. And we have an update for you regarding the McConnell Wash House. Bud Matheny shared updates via social media regarding the progress, "The Wash House, I believe, is pretty well finished. We are delighted with the help of our Facebook friends who donated most of the items." Matheny explained what's next for the McConnell house updates, "Now we're gathering information, writing specs and getting bids on painting all of the outside of the house. The mortar that was mixed in 1833, has to be protected or it turns to sand. So the house will be pressure washed and repainted along with all the woodwork, porches and shutters." Fall is almost here, the turning leaves bring much activity. "This month gets busy towards the end of the month. On September 21, we will have the big tent set up and move the tables and chairs to the tent, with the help of Imel's Greenhouse, we will do the fall decorations with pumpkins, mums, hay bales and fodder shocks," added Matney. Matheny continued to explain the progression of activities, "On Thursday evening we will partner with the Ashland Alliance and hold a business after hours reception for Alliance members.Friday morning it really gets busy. We partner with the extension office next door on Ag day and share our facilities for them to use to set up educational displays in agriculture and livestock. About 400 fourth graders from the county are bussed in for this event. And, of course, a tour of the house is part of that. Then in the afternoon we will be delighted to have FIVCO hold their annual meeting in the big tent. Saturday morning begins the croquet tournament. We will have 40 teams playing on eight courts for the coveted Heritage trophy. Lunch is provided with assistance from the homemakers. At the end of play we will hold an awards banquet to celebrate another successful year. As always we will be involving local students in assisting us as officials, board operators and players." That’s a jam-packed September that will be a great way to welcome autumn to Greenup County folks. October will be equally as exciting, "In October we will be back at it again. We are in the planning stages for a living history event. We will have educational exhibits reflecting life in the 1800s, which is the era of the house. We again hope that students will be bussed in on October 14 and it will be open on October 15 for everyone," said Matheny. The most wonderful time of the year, Christmas is just around the corner. "The McConnell house will be transformed into a Christmas Wonderland for our Christmas Teas and our Christmas open house. Our board members rally to the cause and will be decorating at least four Christmas trees and have lights, garland and decorations on everything that doesn't move. Santa Claus has become a big attraction and will be there for our open house. We have a drawing and will award a $50 gift certificate to some lucky kid to help with their Christmas wishes," shared Matheny. If you would like to be a part of this cherished history icon, let them know, by contacting Bud Matheny. "We are always looking for volunteers, as well as board members. Also during our living history event, we hope to use local drama students to assume the role of past residents of the house to tell about their time living there," concluded Matheny. The historic McConnell House continues to shine and be a beacon for all those in Greenup County to gather together in fellowship.

Servant’s Hearts and Dedication to Community Inspire 60 Year Milestone for Caniff Funeral Home

Gary Newman The Ashland Beacon Caniff’s Funeral Home in Westwood is marking a special milestone of 60 years of service to families and the community. One of the reasons for the enduring success of this business, has little to do with numbers and dollars, and much more to do with a spirit of family. The families served are in their most challenging circumstances and each family and every person is met with dignity, honor and respect. Caniff Funeral Home becomes a part of their family and walks with them. That was the Pat Caniff way. A big part of long-term success is built on the heart and character of the foundation on which it has been constructed, and for 60 years Pat instilled in everybody he worked with how important it is to strive for excellence and to serve each person with dignity, honor, and respect. That’s who he was. He demanded excellence. He had a benevolent heart. He just wanted to help others. “This was his life. The community. He had a servant’s heart,” his daughter, Marcia Caniff Davis explained, “For years, he was on the Fire Department, He dedicated a lot of time to the Lions Club, to the Shriner’s Hospital, he was on the board of directors for 50-60 years” He also worked actively with the Boys Club. In the early 60’s, Pat Caniff saw a need in the Westwood community and partnered with Eddie Riggs for a few years. Caniff would later buy Eddie’s portion out and rename the business. Caniff Funeral Home has been a Westwood staple from that day forward. In the early days, funeral homes also ran ambulance service. “We’ve had many people come through here that said he brought them into the world and he took them out,” Funeral Director Matt Green remarked. That same spirit of family that everyone experienced with Pat, is now being felt with Marcia Caniff Davis. Marcia has been running the day-to-day business for 10-12 years and is now the sole proprietor. She’s continuing her dad’s legacy. He trained her from the ground up and instilled in her the values that he used to build Caniff Funeral Home, and her vision is planning the next 60 years of service. “It's not a job, it’s who we are. It’s a ministry, we feel that it is a type of ministry. My dad told me that years ago. He told me to give 110% to everybody,” explained Caniff Davis, who compassion toward those in the community she serves in is clear. Now, she demands excellence. She has a benevolent heart. She just wants to help others. For 60 years, it’s been the Caniff way, and it looks like it will be the way for a long time to come. “If I can be a fraction of the person he was,” Marcia Caniff Davis concluded, “then I think I’m doing pretty good. I try to do everything the way he would.’

Latin Night Live Returns to Broadway Square

Myrna Hill The Ashland Beacon Sugar skull costumes, margaritas, and bounce houses, oh my! Visit AKY and Ashland For Change have partnered again this year to host their second annual Latin Night Live Celebration in Broadway Square. The event will take place on October 1 from 6-9 p.m. Latin Night Live will conclude Hispanic Heritage Week in Ashland, and will fall during Hispanic Heritage Month. Local businesses will offer specials on food, drinks, and more throughout the week. Latin Night Live 2021 was the first event of its kind in the Ashland area, and drew crowds from all backgrounds. Taco Week was also a huge hit amongst local restaurants and its patrons, but expect some new offerings for Hispanic Heritage Week, which will be September 24-October 1. The national theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is “Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation.” Recognizing different cultures and learning new ways of life is a perfect way to cultivate inclusivity in the community. “Taco Week and Latin Night Live were really popular last year, so we are excited to offer something new and exciting this year,” Assistant Tourism Director, Courtney Hensley, said. The event will celebrate the Dia de Muertos, or Day of the Dead. It is a traditional Mexican holiday that is meant to honor and pay respect to family and loved ones who have passed. Altars are created to guide spirits home and for them to enjoy the offerings brought forth by the living. They contain the four main elements of nature—earth, wind, fire and water. Each element is represented by candles, food, colorful punched paper (papel picado), and water. Marigolds are also included for their strong scent, which is said to attract spirits. Cesiah Blanton, who was born in Mexico, wanted to bring a piece of her culture to Ashland. “The holiday is important because it provides people the opportunity to navigate the bittersweet process of grief and allows us to honor those who have passed on without sadness,” she said. “In Mexican culture, coping with grief is considered an important skill in order to develop healthy coping mechanisms.” Attendees are encouraged to dress as sugar skulls, which are colorfully decorated skulls that adorn altars and celebrate the life of those who have passed on. Sugar skulls are traditionally made out of a sugar mixture and decorated with bright frosting and foils. They are likely the most recognizable symbol of the holiday. “My hope is that individuals gain a deeper respect and appreciation for the holiday and learn to cope with grief in a way that celebrates those who are no longer with us,” Blanton said. “We welcome the community to celebrate the holiday respectfully and authentically.” Latin Night Live will also feature live music from Deejay Juarez, a Lexington-based DJ, food from Chuy’s Tacos, drinks, and more. Attendees are also encouraged to bring a photo of their loved one to place on the altar that will be set up at the event. Arts and crafts and a bounce house will be set up for children.
