   Ashland defeated Russell in the 16th Region Championship, 2-1, to pick up the Tomcats first region crown since 2020. 

   Ashland took the lead over Russell in the 50th minute of the championship on a Troy Barnett goal off a corner kick. Goalie Sawyer Frazier’s’ diving save with 15 minutes left in regulation kept the Tomcats lead at one. Silas Pierzala added a goal in the 78th minute. Frazier later received a red card with 8 seconds remaining in the game that allowed Russell’s Joe Kaczmarcyk to connect on a penalty kick as the game ended 2-1 favoring the Tomcats. The Senior Frazier will not be allowed to participate in the opening round game of the State Tournament when Ashland will host 15th Region Champion Lawrence County Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The Tomcats won a pair of 4-0 contests over West Carter and Rowan County in the opening rounds of the 16thRegion tournament. 

Zach Mccomis, Silas Pierzala, Ryan Runyon and Nick Parker netted goals in the win over West Carter. Nic Johnson assisted on a goal. 

Gavin Maynard, Dean Young, Pierzala and Parker scored goals in the win over Rowan. Luke Stahler had two assists. Landon Griffith and Mccomis added one. 

RUSSELL 15-6-1

Russell defeated Fleming County and East Carter in the 16th Region Tournament before falling to Ashland, 2-1 in the championship. 

Jeison Benitez Ramires scored a pair of goals in the 6-1 win over Fleming County. Brylee Mullins, Alan Benitez Ramires, Noah Miller and Elijah Neel netted goals. Caden Hampton had four saves. 

Jeison scored the lone goal in the 1-0 win over East Carter off an assist from Ben Totten. Hampton had one save in the shutout. 

Russell closes its season at 15-6-1 while still in search of a 16th Region title.

Russell left no question who the best team in the area and one of the top teams in the state is after clinching the 16th Region Championship with an 8-2 win over Ashland in the title game following a 6-0 blanking of West Carter in the semis. 

Alyssa Truett, Eva Blanke and Emma Stamper tallied a pair of goals each in the championship win over the LadyCats. Kaelyn Howard and Sophia Bagby added a goal each. Stamper assisted on a pair of goals. 

Stamper tallied a first half hat trick in the win over West Carter. Bagby, Macy Vonderheide and Blanke each netted a goal. Blanke had a pair of assists and Ava Quinn added another. 

Russell welcomed 15th Region Champion Prestonsburg Monday night in the opening round of the Girls State Tournament. 

 

ASHLAND 17-5

Ashland picked up wins over Fleming County and East Carter in the 16th Region Tournament before falling to Russell in the championship. 

Ashland dropped Fleming County 8-0 in the opening round. Milei Baker had four goals and an assist. Abby Baldwin added two goals. Kenleigh Woods netted a goal with a pair of assists. Meisha Salisbury had a goal and an assist. Mallorie Caudill had a pair of saves in the shutout. 

Ashland trailed much of the contest against East Carter in the semifinals but an Emma Vanhorn goal in the 72 minute evened the game at 1-1 which would eventually move to overtime. Neither team found the net in the first golden goal period, but the Lady Cats turned an Abby Baldwin corner kick in the final 90 seconds of the second extra period into a Milei Baker stick back for a 2-1 win. Caudill had nine saves in goal including a stand to end the first half that saw the Raiders launch five shots in the final minutes toward the goal. 

Baldwin and Woods accounted for the two goals in the championship game against Russell.

Ashland finished its season at 17-5.

ASHLAND 27-7

Ashland defeated South Point, 3-0(26-24, 25-12, 25-21) in its only game this week to finish the regular season at 27 and 7. 

Ashland plays Rose Hill Monday in the opening round of the 64th District Tournament. 

BOYD COUNTY 27-6

Boyd County went 2-1 this week with wins over Huntington and Hurricane and a loss to Cabell Midland. 

Taylor Bartrum had 11 kills and three blocks. Audrey Biggs added six kills and four blocks in the Lady Lions’ 2-0 win over Huntington. 

Boyd knocked off Hurricane, 2-1. Bartrum and Biggs each had 14 kills. Biggs had five blocks and Bartrum added three. 

Boyd fell to Cabell Midland, 2-1. Bartrum led the way with 13 kills. Biggs added 10. 

Boyd meets Fairview Monday in the opening round of the 64th District Tournament being hosted by Rose Hill. 

FAIRVIEW 4-28

Fairview went 0-3 this week with losses to Bath County, Spring Valley and Russell. 

Madison Loving had 13 kills in the 3-1 loss to Bath County. Olivia Meade, Julia Wallace and Loving had four aces. 

Spring Valley beat Fairview 3-0. Loving had five kills. 

Fairview fell to Russell 3-0. Loving had seven kills. 

Fairview meets Boyd County in the opening round of the 64th District Tournament. 

ROSE HILL 18-12

Rose Hill went 2-1 this week with wins over Huntington St. Joe and Sugar Creek Christian and a loss to Ignite, WV. 

Rose Hill beat St. Joe, 3-0. Abigail Justus had 10 kills. Avary Newell added six. Isabel Hensley had 11 aces. 

Rose Hill fell to Ignite, 3-0. Hensley had four kills. 

Rose Hill beat Sugar Creek in straight sets. Justice led the way with nine kills and nine assists. Newell had six. 

Rose Hill meets Ashland in the opening round to the 64th District Tournament. 

RACELAND 18-11

Raceland went 1-1 this week with a district win over Lewis County and a loss to Johnson Central. 

Shaelee Holbrook led the Rams with 13 kills in the straight sets win over Lewis. With the win, the Rams clinched the top seed in the upcoming district tournament. Skyler Brown-Morris had nine kills. Kaylee Braden added eight. 

Raceland fell in straight sets to Johnson Central. Brown-Morris had six kills. Gracie Reed, Holbrook and Braden added five kills. 

Raceland will meet Lewis County in the opening round of the 63rd District Tournament. 

RUSSELL 13-12 

Russell went 2-0 this week with wins over Huntington and Fairview. 

Carmin Corey and Josie Collins had 18 kills each in a 3-2 win over Huntington. Jaycee Hall had six kills and six blocks. 

Russell beat Fairview 3-0. Corey had 11 kills Jada Hodges had six aces. Emily Clark added five. 

Russell will meet Greenup in the opening round of the 63rd District Tournament.

GREENUP COUNTY 19-12

 

Greenup County went 2-0 this week with straight set wins over East Carter and Fleming County. 

Peyton Powell had 14 kills in the win over East Carter. Lucy Roy had eight kills. Rilee Dillow added four aces. 

Powell led the way with 13 kills in the win over Fleming. Roy added 11. Laiken Russell had four aces. 

Greenup meets Russell in the opening round of the 63rd District Tournament

BOYD COUNTY 44 ROWAN COUNTY 18

Boyd bounced back after the loss to Ashland last week with a 44-18 win over Rowan County. Rhett Holbrook went 10 of 13 through the air for 191 yards and three touchdowns. Cole Hicks hauled in two passes—one for a score—for 96 yards. Garrett Crum caught three passes for 65 yards and a touchdown. Marcus Brumfield had the final receiving touchdown. Cameron Collins rushed for 127 yards on seven carries and a score. Holbrook added 73 yards. Dakota Thompson had a pair of rushing touchdowns. 

Boyd County finishes district play at 2-2 and turns its attention to Lawrence County and a trip to Louisa Friday night. 

RACELAND 43 PARIS 13

Raceland turned an unbeaten Paris team into a beaten down opponent after the Rams hammered the Greyhounds, 43-13. 

Raceland led 14-0 at the half but a Paris touchdown to open the second half pulled the Greyhounds to within seven. The Rams responded by outscoring the Greyhounds, 29-6 the rest of the way, including 22 four quarter points. 

Parker Fannin caught a 54-yard pass from Jonah Arnett on a wide receiver pass to open the contest on what was the first part of a career night for the senior. Fannin hauled in five catches for 166 yards and a score. 

Noah Wallace had a career night as well as the senior tailback rushed for four touchdowns while crossing the 2,500-yard mark for career rushing yards. Jaxon Heighton led the Rams rushing attack with 79 yards on only six carries. Logan Lundy threw for 176 yards and a pair of touchdowns with Rowsey catching the second in the final stanza. 

Raceland visits Nicholas County Friday night to close out district play. 

RUSSELL 38 BATH COUNTY 8

 

Russell continued its unbeaten district slate with a 38-8 win over Bath County. Ethan Pack threw for 126 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Jayden Pennington and Andre Richardson-Crews each caught a touchdown. Richardson-Crews had 32 receiving yards and 39 rushing yards with a rushing touchdown in his first game back since an injury a few weeks back. Elijah Hankins led the Devils with 49 rushing yards and a score. 

Russell welcomes East Carter Friday night for the district championship. 

FAIRVIEW 56 PHELPS 28

 

Jace Manning threw for 213 yards and four touchdowns to lead Fairview to a 56-28 thumping of Phelps on senior night. 


Xavien Kouns rushed for 142 yards on 10 carries and caught six passes for 125 yards and a touchdown in the rout. Logan McCormick, Jace Murray and Manning ran for scores. Murray also recovered a fumble and raced 30-yards for a touchdown. Roman Mayes caught five balls for 56 yards and a pair of touchdowns. 

Fairview travels to Paris to close the regular season on Friday night. 

JOHNSON CENTRAL 33 GREENUP COUNTY 13

Greenup County trailed Johnson Central 21-13 at the half but the Golden Eagles would hold the Musketeers scoreless in the second half while scoring 12 fourth quarter points for a 33-13 win in Lloyd. 

Tyson Sammons ran for 134 yards on 17 carries and both Greenup touchdowns in the loss. Sammons completed only one pass on eight attempts for the only completed pass by either team in the rushing dominant performance. 

Greenup welcomes Rowan County to close district play Friday night.

ASHLAND 26-7

Ashland picked up a win over Fairview, 3-0. Khia Robinson led the way with 11 kills. Laney Fannin had seven. Sadie Chaffins kicked in six. 

Ashland welcomes South Point Monday night and visits Johnson Central on Saturday.

 

 

BOYD COUNTY 24-5

Boyd County earned straight set wins over Greenup and Raceland this week. 

Taylor Bartrum had 14 kills and Audrey Biggs added nine kills and five blocks in the win over Greenup. Bartrum had 15 kills in the win over Raceland. Biggs added 10 with four blocks. Sydney Clark tallied four aces. 

Boyd County welcomes Rowan County Tuesday and meets Hurricane, Cabell Midland and Huntington on Thursday. 

FAIRVIEW 4-25

Fairview fell to Greenup and Green, OH in straight sets this week. 

Makenzi Slone and Madison Loving had four kills each in the loss to Greenup. No stats were reported in the loss to Green. 

Fairview welcomes Bath County Monday, visits Spring Valley Tuesday and Russell Thursday.

ROSE HILL 16-11

Rose Hill was idle this week.

Rose Hill welcomes Huntington St. Joe Monday, Ignite, WV Tuesday and Sugar Creek Christian Academy Thursday. 

RACELAND 17-10

Raceland went 1-3 this week with a 3-2 win over Greenup and straight set losses to Boyd County, Rowan County and Whitley County. 

Gracie Reed led the Rams with eight kills in the loss to Boyd. Kody Haddix had five. 

No stats were reported in the remainder of the Rams contests. 

Raceland visits Lewis County Tuesday and welcomes Johnson Central Thursday.

RUSSELL 11-12 

Russell defeated Rock Hill, Rowan County and Knott County Central while suffering losses to Montgomery County and Whitley County. 

Carmin Corey had 12 kills in the win over Rock Hill. Sydney Sizemore added nine. Emily Clark tallied nine aces. 

Josie Collins led the Devils with 16 kills in the win over Rowan. Corey had 14. 

Russell welcomes Huntington Monday and Fairview Thursday. 

GREENUP COUNTY 17-12

 

Greenup County went 4-2 this week with wins over Fairview, Letcher County Central, Bath County and Breathitt County and losses to Boyd and Raceland. 

Peyton Powell had 10 kills in the loss to Boyd. Laiken Russell added five. 

Greenup bounced back with a 3-0 win over Fairview. Powell led the way with 14 kills and four aces. 

Greenup took a tough district loss to Raceland, 3-2. Powell had 20 kills and six blocks. Russell added 14 kills. Roy had 11. 

Greenup visits East Carter Monday and welcomes Fleming County Tuesday.
