James Robert (Bob) Martin

   James Robert (Bob) Martin, 90, of Ashland, KY passed away on June 3, 2021. He was born in Oxford, MS on January 1, 1931 to the late Burl Martin and Ola Kemp Austin. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a son James (Jim) Martin whose wife Sharon survives.

   He was an equipment operator and a lifetime member of the IUOE #181. He was also an active member of Unity Baptist Church where he served as a deacon, Sunday school teacher and on various committees. He was a pilot, golfer and enjoyed boating, camping and woodworking, especially making dulcimers.

   James is survived by his loving wife Mary Robinette Martin of Ashland, son William (Bill) Martin of Ashland, grandchildren Beth (Andrew), Megan (Jason), Will, Sage and Sienna and great-grandchildren John, Ben, James, Emily, Abigail, Aaron and Caleb.

   Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 8, 2021 at 1 p.m. at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time. There will be a visitation on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 from 11:30-1:30 p.m. at the Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, Kingsport, TN 37660 followed by burial at Oak Hill Cemetery with the committal service being held in the mausoleum chapel.

Eunice V. Carter

   Eunice V. Carter, 100, of Ashland, KY entered into eternal rest with her Lord and Savior Saturday morning, May 29, 2021. 

   Eunice was born August 10, 1920 in Westwood a daughter of the late Alex and Mary Newman Fisher. She was also preceded in death by her loving husband of 40 years, Glenn A. Carter; a daughter, Pam Hess; a son Mark Carter; siblings and their spouses, Gerald and Jo Fisher; Theda and Gene Williams; Enid and Paul Holbrook; and daughter in law Liz Carter.

   Eunice attended Fairview schools and graduated from Ashland Sr. High School in 1938. She worked at the Ashland Home Telephone Co. During WWII, while her husband was service in the Navy, she worked at Clayton and Lambert. She was a beloved mother and homemaker. When her children were older, she volunteered with the children and the Cerebral Palsy school, the American Heart Association and the Cancer Society. She was also a caregiver for her own mother, Mary Fisher, in her later years.

   Left to cherish her memory are her sons, Charles Carter, Keith Carter, Danny Carter; daughters Linda (Mike) Wright, and Leigh Ann (Mark) Fielding; 17 grandchilren, 32 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

   Funeral services were held Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Steen Funeral Home-Central Avenue Chapel and were officiated by Reverend Leon Dalton.  Online condolences may be made to


Rosolene Rice

   Rosolene Evelyn Rice, 93, of Ashland, passed away Monday, May 31, 2021, surrounded by her family at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo, Mississippi.

   She was born June 1, 1927 in Ashland, to the late Elisha Charles Howard and Aliene Pemberton Howard. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, George F. Rice; son, David D. Blair; sister; Helen Hinkle; and brothers, Harold Howard and Bill McGuire.

   Rosolene was a member of Second Baptist Church in Ashland and retired from the Ashland Independent Schools.

   Those left to cherish her memory include sons, George Jr. (Genea) Rice of Memphis, TN, Michael A. Rice of Ashland; and Danny (Barbara) Blair of Ironton, OH; daughters, Kimberly (Tyrus) Luther of Hickory Flat, MS; and Alison Rice of Ashland; sister, Elaine Ewals of Pt. Richey, FL; a host of loving grandchildren, great grandchildren, extended family members and dear friends.

   The funeral was held Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with Pastor Ed Caudill officiating. Burial will follow in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Michael Allen Hickman

   Michael Allen Hickman, 42, of Greenup, formerly of Ashland, Kentucky passed away June 3, 2021 at his residence. 

   Michael was born November 26, 1978 to the late Arnold Michael Hickman and Carol Kimbler Kinney (Jimmy) of Ashland, Kentucky. Also preceding him in death was his girlfriend, Mia Moore. 

   Michael professed that Jesus Christ is his savior and was a self employed tree trimmer and contractor. Surviving him in addition to his mother is one son, Christopher Adams of Ashland, one brother, Kenneth Kinney, three sisters, Michelle Hickman, Amber White (Aaron), Deanna Lacroix (Eddie), a special aunt Vonda Reffitt, two close uncles Paul Hickman and Ricky Kinney, and many beloved family and friends. 

   Funeral services for Michael will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, June 10, 2021 with Pastor Mike Moore officiating at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland. Visitation will be held Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow services in Old Fields Cemetery in Argillite.

Larry Joe Baer

   Larry Joe Baer, 81, of Ashland, died Thursday, June 3, 2021 at his residence.

   He was born October 21, 1939 in Ashland, the son of the late Melvin A. and Mildred Curry Baer.

   He was retired from Pipefitters Local #248, with 50 years service and a member of the Kentucky National Guard. He was a member of the Ashland Elks Lodge #350, lifetime member of Amvets Post #95, Poage Masonic Lodge #325 F &AM, El Hasa Shrine and Raceland American Legion Post #043.

   In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by a daughter, Robin Efta, grandson, Dale Jordan Jr., and a special friend, Sue Jordan.

   Survivors include one son, Larry Joe (Diana) Baer II of Ashland; two daughters, Tonya (Billy) Phillips of Ashland and Kari (Buddy) Hunholz of Lake Worth FL; brother, Tony (Carolyn) Baer; sisters, Elizabeth Hall and Sharon (Ed) Castledine; eight grandchildren, Carrie Baer McAlister, Whitney Phillips, Tyler Phillips, Hilary Efta Brown, Quincy Efta, Joey Efta, Alexi Hunholz and Zach Hunholz, four great grandchildren, Max, Ava Jo, Beckham and Mila.

   Funeral services will be conducted 12 p.m. Wednesday, June 9, 2021 at Miller Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Bellefonte Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. till 12 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. The Ashland Elks Lodge will conduct an Elks service at 11:45 a.m. Wednesday. Kay Stewart Wheeler

   Kay Stewart Wheeler, 81, of Ashland, Kentucky, wife of Danny Wheeler, died peacefully at her home, Tuesday morning, June 1, while under hospice care. 

   Kay was born November 7, 1939, in Ashland, a daughter of the late Lonnie and Bertha Baldridge Stewart. She was preceded in death, in addition to her parents, by a grandson, Josiah Keith Wheeler and a great granddaughter, Neaveh Goodrich; two brothers: Burgess and Jack, and two sisters: Garnett Sexton and Ann Burnem. 

   Surviving, in addition to her husband, include two sons: Rev. Stuart (Mary Anne) Wheeler of Phoenix, Arizona, and  Keith (Rhetta Ann) Wheeler of Rapid City, South Dakota; daughter Vicki Lynn (Bradley) McLean of Elizabethtown; nine grandchildren: Lewis Wheeler, Caleb Wheeler, Elizabeth Goodrich, Morganne Pickett, Grace Wheeler, Elena Wheeler, Charity Letonek, Luke McLean, Mark McLean, and 13 great grandchildren.

Mary Frances Haner Lewis

   Mary Frances Haner Lewis, 89, of Flatwoods, KY, passed away on June 3, 2021, at Kingsbrook Life Center in Ashland, KY.

   Mrs. Lewis was born November 4, 1931, in Gallipolis, OH to the late Russell Lee and Frances Neal Haner.

   In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by four brothers: Junior, Jim, Wendell, and Jerry Haner; and a sister Hilda Barcus.

   Mrs. Lewis was a homemaker who loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. She enjoyed gardening and planting flowers and was a fantastic cook. Mary was of the Baptist faith.

   Mrs. Lewis is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Elisha Lewis Jr. of Flatwoods, KY; two sons, Ray (Juda) Lewis of Ashland, and Roy “Newt” (Patricia) Lewis of Worthington; two daughters, Mary “Cathy” (Steve) Smith of Flatwoods, and Bendetta (Scott) Lanham of Flatwoods; two grandchildren, Shawn Smith and Sophia Looney; two step grandchildren, Emily Wells and Corey Maggard; three great-grandchildren, Maddox Smith, Willow Smith, and Stella Looney; two step great-grandchildren, Kennedy Sterling and Caleb Cooksey; two great-great grandchildren, Harlen and Addy Maggard; three brothers, Buddy (Gladys) Haner, Kenny (Marsha) Haner, and Bob (Carolyn) Haner all of Gallipolis, OH; two sisters, Harriett Martin of Gallipolis, OH and Josie Mowery of Springfield, OH; and a host of extended family and friends.

   The family has arranged a private graveside service with Bailey Family Funeral Home in Flatwoods with Rev. Jason A. Bailey officiating.

Margaret Ardella Carmichael Moore

   Margaret Ardella Carmichael Moore, 93, of Bellefonte, passed away Friday, June 4, 2021, following a brief illness.

   Margaret was born February 28, 1928, at Russell, Kentucky to the late Thomas E. and Alma Ethridge Carmichael.

   In addition to her parents, Margaret was preceded in death by 3 husbands, the father of her children, Thomas L. Moore in 1993, her 2nd husband, Garland Mowery in 2011 and Ray Hunt; one son, Thomas L. Moore, Jr. and four sisters, Edwina Christian, Vivian Peek, Dorothy Oxnard, and Olive McGuire.

   Margaret was a retired schoolteacher with the Greenup County School System, having worked at McKell Elementary and Greysbranch Elementary. She also owned and operated Moore’s Merryland Kindergarten and had many jobs at the family restaurant, The Outpost. She was a 2-time delegate to the Republican National Convention. She was a past president of the Greenup County Republican Women’s Club and volunteered for over 30 years at Kings Daughters and Sons Home for the Aged in Ashland.

   Survivors include 2 daughters, Carrie Vallance (Gary) of Bellefonte, Mary Lane Wise of Oak Island, NC; two sons, Michael L. Moore of Ashland and John E. Moore of Corinth, KY; daughter in law, Cindy Moore of Morehead; eight grandchildren, Ginger Sly, Damon Caskey, Tony Vallance, David A Vallance, Calvin Moore, Phillip Thomas Moore, Tanner Moore and Camiran Moore; 11 great-grandchildren, Tucker and Tillman, Connor and Caydence, Jordan, Toni, Zoe and Lylly, Kris, Claire and Callen, and great-great grandchild, Carter.

   Services will be conducted Wednesday, June 9, 2021, at 11 a.m. at First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ by Minister Stephen Smythers. Burial will follow in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be Tuesday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Caniff Funeral Home and one hour before services at the church.

David Allen Harman II

   David Allen Harman II, 55, of Navarre, FL formerly of Ashland, KY, passed away Tuesday, May 25 at his home. 

   David Allen was born June 11, 1965 in Ashland, a son of David Allen Harman and Margaret “Peggy” Justice Harman of Ashland. In addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, David Austin Harman of Navarre, FL, former spouse, Elizabeth Cline Harman, brother, Dale Austin Harman (Misty), nephew Dylan Avery Harman. 

   David Allen was a 1983 Boyd County graduate and University of Kentucky Alumni. He was the president of Harman Environmental and was a passionate UK fan and avid fisherman. He was known for his love of family and humor. 

   In lieu of flowers he would like donations made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Friends and family are invited to attend a service at Preston Family Funeral Home, Saturday, June 19 at 1 p.m. Friends can begin arriving at 12 p.m. Friends and family are invited to join later that day at the Flatwoods City Park in Flatwoods, KY, shelter #1 from 5-9 p.m.


Charles Robert Hart

   Charlie Hart, 86, of Ashland, Kentucky, died May 30.  

   Charlie was born February 2, 1935 in Ashland, a son of the late Homer and Lillian Carr Hart. He was retired from the rigger shop at AK Steel, was a member of Fairview Baptist Church, a former member of the KY National Guard, and was an avid Ashland Tomcat and UK Wildcat fan, always having his transistor radio tuned in at the right time. Charlie was known to get just as excited as the play by play announcers. 

   He was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by his loving wife, Donna J. ‘Ree’ Hart in 2008. He was also preceded by a grandson; Ryan Hart in 2003, and two sisters: Janet Jones and Jean Fraley. 

   Surviving include three sons, Jeff Hart, and fiance’ Beth, Greg Hart, and wife Tonya, and Jon Hart and Jennifer, all of Ashland;  four grandchildren: Ashley Riley, Aaron Hart, Amy Skaggs, and Jacob Hart; nine great-grandchildren; Kahlan, Kimber, Wyatt, Beckett, Molleigh, Murphy, Gavin, Garrett, and Gracen.  

   Funeral services were Thursday, June 3, by Pastor Michael York at Preston Family Funeral Home. Burial was in the Rose Hill Burial Park.  Contributions in Charlie’s memory, may be made in lieu of flowers, to Fairview Baptist Church, 2040 Main Street W, Ashland, Kentucky 41102.


Joyce Lively

   Joyce Lively, age 83, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, June 1, 2021. Joyce was born and raised in Middlesex, North Carolina, and was the youngest of 5 children.

   In 1960, Joyce relocated to Ashland, where she settled to raise her family, and lived a very full life. She filled her days with music, dancing, reading, traveling, and learning to play the piano. Joyce worked as an accounts receivable analyst for Aristech Chemical until retirement, at which time she devoted her days volunteering at Hager Elementary, reading to children.

   Joyce is survived by her husband, Danny E. Lively, their two daughters Terri Lynn Cravens (Ken Cravens), and Danielle Lively, four grandchildren, Christa Lynn (James Hutton), Brooklyn Kent (Hannah Cravens), Kathryn Paige Lively (Chris Hall), and Nathan Joshua Lively, as well as three great-grandchildren, Jaxton and Colton, and Carson.

   In lieu of funeral services and in loving memory of Joyce, we ask that all who wish to participate make a donation to (Lewy Body Dementia Association), The Humane Society, or any charitable organization of your choice. Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.


Paul Glenn Reliford

   Paul Glenn (Daddy Paul) Reliford, 84, of Ashland, passed away May 29, 2021. 

   Paul was born April 7, 1937 to the late Charles and June Ison Reliford. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife Germaine Lemaster Reliford in 2012, sister Marlen Eckhart and a brother, Charles Reliford. 

   Paul was of Baptist faith, an Army MP During the Cold War, and was a retired Superintendent from Fairview Independent School District after 35 years of service. Paul enjoyed golfing, coaching football, was former man of the year with Elks Lodge BPOE 350, and former member of Bellefonte Country Club. 

   Surviving him are two sons, Christopher Paul Reliford (Donna) of South Carolina and Glenn Reliford (Christy) of Ashland; sister Barbara Faulconer; grandchildren Tanner, Tristan, Logan, Kendale, and Shelby Reliford, Andrew Sallie, Adam Sallie and great-grandchildren, Giovanni and Maya. 

   A memorial service was held Thursday, June 3, 2021 at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.

John W. Centers

   John W. Centers, 85, of Ashland, passed away Tuesday morning, June 1, 2021. 

   John was born January 27, 1936 to the late Jesse and Talitha V. Gallaher Centers. In addition to his parents John was also preceded in death by his wife, Rose Ann Coburn Centers in 2014 and three brothers and one sister. 

   John was a United States Navy Veteran, Retired as an electrician from CSX, enjoyed wording jigsaw puzzles, and was member of Crum Chapel Church. 

   Surviving John is one son, John Randall Centers of Somerset, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. 

   Gravesite rites were held for John Friday, June 4, 2021 at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens with Military Rites performed by Ceredo/Kenova American Legion Post #93.

Joyce Lynn Thompson

   Joyce Lynn Thompson, 61, of Greenup, passed away Thursday, June 3, 2021. 

   Joyce was born December 19, 1959 in Ashland, a daughter of the late Rushianna Franklin Barber and Clayton (Lynn) Barber of Gaston, South Carolina. In addition to her mother she was also preceded in death by a brother, Tim Barber.

   Joyce was a 1978 graduate of Paul G. Blazer High School. She was a loving mother and grandmother.

   Those left to cherish her memory include her loving husband of 44 years Dennis Thompson of Greenup, her children she loved Kevin (Jamie) Thompson of Greenup, Steven (Autumn) Thompson of Greenup, brothers Randy (Monica) Barber of Lexington, Brian (Sam) Barber of Westwood, her grandchildren she adored Kalob Thompson, Cristopher Thompson, Allison Thompson, Luke Thompson, Kadaynce Thompson, special nieces Amy Hawkins and Lori Beth Stewart, close friend Connie Hobbs, sister-in-law Donna Thompson, brother-in-law Danny (Steph) Thompson, mother-in-law Betty Thompson and a host of extended family and friends.

   Graveside services were held Monday, June 7, 2021 at the Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods. Pastor Edgar Nethercutt officiated.
