Frances I. Hilt

 

   Frances I. Hilt, 87, of Ashland, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 2, 2021, while surrounded by her family.

   Frances was born in October 18, 1933, in Milton, West Virginia, a daughter of the late Elza E. and Magnolia Alley Burdette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gaylon Hilt; son, Floyd Warner; two grandchildren, Brandy and Crystal; brother, Forest Eugene Burdette; and sisters, Marion Grubb, Zelpha Swafford and Marylin Burdette.

   Frances was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church and was a loving and devoted homemaker.

   Those left to cherish her memory include daughters, Frances Hale (Rick), Patsy Rotramel, Juanita Warner, and a longtime daughter in law, Kathy Warner; grandchildren, John Rotramel (Raine), Eric Warner (Anne), Aaron Warner (Jessica), Richard Hale (Jennifer), Elizabeth Parker, Chris Hale, Joel Dant (Stacey), Justin Dant (Stephanie); 15 great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

   A celebration of France’s life was held Thursday, August 5, 2021, at Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel with Pastor Lonnie Laney officiating.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to Second Baptist Church, 4950 Williams Avenue, Ashland, KY, 41101.

Thelma Garnet ‘Peggy’ Adams

 

   Peggy, 93 years old, of Ashland, Kentucky, passed away Wednesday, August 4, at Kingsbrook Lifecare Center. 

   She was born June 17, 1928 in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of the late Ollie and Goldie Smith Adams. She was a lifelong resident of Ashland and the historian of the W.T. Smith and Joel Clark Families as well as the Springhill neighborhood of Ashland. Peggy is survived by many cousins. 

   A family memorial service was held Monday, August 9, 2021 at Preston Family Funeral Home, Highway 5, Ashland, by Pastor James Stamper. 

   In lieu of flowers contributions can be made, in Peggy’s memory, to Community Hospice, 1480 Carter Avenue, Ashland, Kentucky 41101.

 

James Joseph Sagraves 

 

   James Joseph Sagraves, 68 of Ashland, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2021, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

   James was born December 2, 1952, in Ashland to the late Joseph and Wanda Tipton Sagraves.

   In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother Tony Sagraves and a sister Christine Sagraves.

   James was self employed and did auto body work for many years. He attended Unity Baptist Church. He loved to go play Bingo and go bowling, but above everything he loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

   He leaves behind his loving wife of 46 years Nancy Sipps Sagraves; three daughters Christol Mosley (Steve Durand) of Phoenix, Arizona, Stephanie Black (John) of Ashland and Angela Peters (Bobby) of Mt Orab, Ohio; two brothers Michael Sagraves and Darrell Lee Sagraves both of Ashland; one sister Carol Jo Sagraves of Florida; 11 grandchildren Tyson Mosley, Tyler Mosley, Travis Durand, Trevor Durand, James Robert Duley, Eric Dalton, John Tyler Black, Jearad Crisp, Casey Crisp, Courtney Crisp, Ashley Crisp; seven great-grandchildren Rowon, Carson, Nevaeh, Jr, Addison, Cohen, and Oakley; with one great-grandchild on the way; along with a host of extended family and friends.

   Funeral services were Monday, August 9, 2021, at Caniff Funeral Home in Westwood. Burial followed at Rose Hill Burial Park in Ashland with military honors given by the United States Navy and Kenova American Legion Post #93.

Kimberly Perry Ross

 

   Kimberly Perry Ross, 54, of Ashland, passed away Thursday evening, August 5, 2021 at her residence. 

   Kim was born, July 20, 1967 in Ashland, Kentucky to the late Joseph Franklin Perry and Alberta Clark Perry of Flatwoods. Kim was of Christian Faith and was a caretaker of many. She enjoyed taking care of her loved ones and friends always trying to please everyone. 

   Surviving Kim, in addition to her mother, are her husband, Scot Ross of Ashland; son Brian Scot Ross and his wife Nikita of Ashland; one brother, Joe Perry and his wife Gina of Florence, In. and her precious grandson, Moxen Scot Ross. 

   A memorial for Kim was held Monday, August 9, 2021 at Miller Funeral Home in Ashland.

William T. Watson

 

   William T. Watson passed away on Sunday, August 1, at Woodland Oaks Health Care in Ashland, Kentucky. He was born on May 7, 1927, to the late Catherine Parrard Watson and Whitfield P. Watson.

   Bill was raised in Ashland, Kentucky and graduated from Ashland High School. He proudly served in the U. S. Navy after high school. He later graduated from Ohio State University. After graduating, he returned to Ashland and married Georgia Fannin in 1953. They were married for 63 years. Bill worked for Armco Steel for 17 years, leaving there to join his uncle in the family owned business of White Swan Laundry and Dry Cleaners, which he owned and managed for many years. He was one of the original partners in Midtown Shopping Center. He oversaw its construction and managed the center until its sale several years ago. He and his wife later owned and operated White Swan Gallery and Gift Shop. Bill was a great photographer and loved traveling.

   Bill was active in the community. He was in the Ashland Rotary Club for many years; he served as treasurer for the YMCA and was very involved in the capital campaign that led to the construction of the YMCA in its current location.

   Bill was a life long member of First Presbyterian Church in Ashland where he served as a Deacon.

   In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by his brother Whit and his daughter Karen Watson. He is survived by his daughter Cathy and her husband Larry; five grandchildren, Tiffany (Derek) Peters, Stacey Wilson, Shawn (Kellie) Wilson, Kristin (Rick) Haas; Jason (River) Wilson, and five great granddaughters and one great grandson.

   A private service was held on Sunday, August 8 with Jimm Smedley officiating. Steen Funeral Home of Ashland is in charge of arrangements.

David Preston Tackett 

 

   David Tackett, 66, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, died Saturday, August 7, in Kings Daughters Medical Center. 

   David was born September 10, 1954 in Grundy, Virginia, a son of the late John and Ruby Hipps Tackett. He was a U.S. Marine serving in Vietnam. David was preceded in death, in addition to his parents, by a sister, Betty Duncan. 

   Surviving include his wife, Patty McMonigal Tackett; brother Don Tackett and wife Carol of Ashland; sister Linda Harris and husband Tom of St. Louis, Missouri. 

   In keeping with David's wishes, there will be no service. Preston Family Funeral Home.

 

Clyde U. Tarr

 

   Clyde U. Tarr, 81, of Russell, passed away Monday, August 2, 2021 at Kings Daughters Medical Center. Clyde was born January 30, 1940 in Ashland, a son of the late Ben and Daisy Osborne Tarr. In addition to his parents, Clyde was also preceded in death by his wife of 16 years, Carol Murray Tarr, brothers James and Shannon Tarr, sisters Opal Huffman and Eva Tarr.

   Clyde attended the Fairview Baptist Church in Westwood. He was a member of the Poage Masonic Lodge #325, Order of Eastern Star Westwood Chapter #569, a very active member of the El Hasa Shrine, including past Director Emeritus of the Children’s Hospital, Motor Corp A-Team, Past President of the SAASMC and Past Exalted Ruler of the Elks, B.P.O.E #350.

   Clyde worked at the former National Mines in Greenup County and retired Maintenance Technician from Marathon.

   Those left to cherish his memory include his daughter Julia Tarr Boyd and husband Aaron of Flatwoods, his grandchildren Caroline, Andrew and Jacob Boyd and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family.

   Funeral services were held Friday, August 6, 2021 at the Steen Funeral Home Central Avenue Chapel by Russell Schmidt. Burial is in Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens.

Allen Keith Caldwell

 

   Allen Keith Caldwell, 74, of Circleville, Ohio, passed away peacefully on June 6, 2021 surrounded by loved ones.

   Allen was born on May 11, 1947 to Grace Caldwell and loved telling stories about growing up in Candy Holler, KY. Allen joined the Air Force in 1969. He was proud of his military service, which included time in Vietnam and as part of the Strategic Air Command in Omaha, NE.

   While stationed in Germany in 1970, Allen had a daughter Mercedes D. After being honorably discharged and returning to the Ohio Valley, he had a son, Matthew, in 1987.

   Allen was a passionate reader, writer, and musician and he spent most of his retirement doing any one of those things. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world, something he often mentioned. He was unendingly proud of his children and always tried his best to support them. Allen was a strong, kind, loving, and supportive father. His knowledge and guidance was the foundation of his family and many friendships.

   Allen was predeceased by his mother, Grace Caldwell Castle and his brother, Curtis “Jody” Castle. He leaves behind his daughter, Mercedes and her spouse, Scott, and son Matthew and his spouse, Megan, 7 grandchildren, ages 34 years to 14 weeks, and 14 great grandchildren.

   The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Briggs Lawrence County Public Library.

   There was a memorial service Saturday, August 7 at Golden Oaks Memorial Gardens in Ashland with full military honors. Steen Funeral Home has been entrusted with services.

 

Danny Gene Hensley 

 

   Danny Gene Hensley, 70, of Flatwoods, Kentucky, passed away on Wednesday, August 4, 2021, in King’s Daughters Medical Center.

   He was born May 25, 1951 in Ashland, Kentucky to the late Sherman and Vada Blair Hensley. His siblings, John, Gradith and Genetta also preceded him in death.

   Danny attended First Church of the Nazarene in Ashland. He retired following a long career in construction. An avid sports fan, he was formerly the President of Russell-Flatwoods Little League.

   Those left to cherish his memory include two sons, Ronald (Cheryl) Hensley of Pataskala, OH, and Jeffrey (Sherri) Hensley of Kenova, WV; daughter, Julie Hensley-Steele of Ashland; sister, Margie (Frank) Roberts of Columbus, OH; and two adoring grandchildren, Tanner and Katelyn Steele.

   A celebration of Danny's life will be held at 7 p.m. Friday, August 13, 2021, at Ashland First Church of the Nazarene. Words of comfort will be provided by Pastor Kevin Campbell. Visitation will be from 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Friday, at the church.

   Arrangements have been entrusted to Steen Funeral Homes.
