Boyd County Hosts Annual Readifest Aug 11

In years past, parents and children waited in person to pick up Readifest supplies for students heading into the coming school year. Since the pandemic hit, the Boyd County Youth Services had to find a more creative means to get the supplies to the students, with as little contact as possible. Last year, they did a drive through Readifest, and it was successful. On Wednesday, August 11, they are once again following suit since COVID numbers are on the rise again. This is the safest and fastest way to dispense supplies to the students.

Boyd County Family Youth Services will sponsor their 28th Annual Readifest at Boyd County High School for any youth attending Boyd County Schools from preschool through 12th grade. Parents will begin by registering their child and verifying that they attend Boyd County Schools and then they will proceed to drive through, where a volunteer will bring backpacks full of grade appropriate school supplies and hygiene products to the vehicle for pick up. Some of the hygiene products include a toothbrush, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner and soap.

The Readifest volunteers will be offering door prizes at the end of the event, and you don’t even have to be present to win. An adjacent church, Cornerstone Community Church will be offering flyers inviting children in need of both clothing and shoes for the new school year. Also, food services will be providing breakfast and lunch to all participating students.

Tracy Caldwell with the Boyd County Schools Youth Services Center said, “Last year we anticipated about 300 families attending and we ended up serving 421 families.” Caldwell anticipates at least 400 will be in attendance this year. This event only seems to grow yearly. The COVID pandemic has hit our community hard and with many people still out of work, the need for assistance with school readiness is understandable.

Recently, Boyd County Schools announced that all school supplies and class fees will be waived for the upcoming school year to ease the burden on families in the district. If parents would like to send their kids to school with wipes, Lysol, paper towels, zip lock bags, dry erase markers or snacks for the younger children, the items are always welcome and needed in the classroom.

The Boyd County Readifest will be hosted at Boyd County High School located at 14375 Lions Lane in Ashland from 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The Cornerstone Community Church partners with the Boyd County Readifest and invites students to stop by and get clothes and shoes for the upcoming school year. Cornerstone Community Church is located at 12001 Twin Ridge Road in Ashland.
