Boyd County Community Development and they Boyd County Code Enforcement are thrilled to announce Boyd County’s first-ever Repair Affair! This is an exciting new initiative designed to foster community spirit and support local senior citizens. This event marks a significant step toward enhancing neighborhood connections and providing essential home repairs for those who have shaped our community.

Boyd County Judge Executive, Eric Chaney expressed strong support for the event in a recent Facebook video, highlighting its role in strengthening community bonds. “This is the very definition of neighbors helping neighbors,” he stated. “It’s a fantastic way to get the community involved, pairing neighbors with others who need repairs around the house. We’ve seen great success with similar events in Ashland, and we’re excited to bring this to Boyd County. We plan to make it an annual event.”

The Repair Affair invites residents to participate in light repairs and cleanup efforts at the homes of senior citizens. This initiative not only provides practical assistance but also honors the timeless values of respect and gratitude. Volunteers will have the opportunity to give back to those who have contributed to the community, creating meaningful connections across generations.

Casey Abrams, a key organizer, encourages everyone to participate: “Join Repair Affair and make a real difference in the lives of individuals right here in Boyd County! We’re mobilizing volunteers to ensure homes are safe, secure, and weatherized, contributing to neighborhood stability. This isn’t about decorating or remodeling – it’s about essential repairs that change lives. No matter your skill level, you can help! Volunteer teams will be matched with homes based on team size and skills. Whether you’re a team of 15 or just one, we need YOU!”

Volunteers of all skill levels are welcome. While some teams may be highly skilled in-home repairs, others may have little to no experience. This is not a problem – volunteers will be matched with tasks that suit their abilities. Even if you can’t handle physical repairs, there are numerous other volunteer opportunities, such as preparing lunch or acting as a runner. Volunteers from churches, corporations, agencies, social clubs, workplace teams, school groups, and scouting organizations are expected to join in.

On the day of the event, volunteers will meet at Westwood Park at 7:30 a.m. for a brief overview of the day’s activities, coffee, and a quick breakfast. This will also be a chance to check-in, receive free shirts, and meet other volunteers. The event will provide lunch at Westwood Park around 11:30 a.m.

Volunteers will be paired with tasks based on their skill sets and the specific needs of the repairs. For those involved in physical repairs, tools will need to be brought by the volunteers, although paint roller cages, roller covers, and brushes will be provided. Each job will need to be completed in a timely manner, with prior discussions held to ensure clarity on what’s required.

To become part of the Repair Affair, volunteer forms are available at boydcountyky.gov/repairaffair. For any questions, contact Kacy Abrams at 606.547.2067 or email kabrams@boydcountyky.gov.

Don’t miss out on this wonderful opportunity to be a part of something big and make a difference in the lives of those around you.
